Pocket shawls are trending, and with good reason! They're stylish, comfortable, warm, and have pockets...what more could a girl want!
Jump to:
A crochet pocket shawl is an wrap or shawl with large pockets. It's the perfect accessory on a chilly fall evening, to sit by the warmth of the fire pit in the back yard or to go for a stroll around the lake. And you won't have to worry about bringing a purse or where to keep your phone...the large pockets will easily hold everything you need, and keep your hands toasty warm too!
This free pocket shawl crochet pattern is easily customizable too. If you'd like it a bit larger or smaller (or even for a child), you can easily increase or decrease the rows and/or stitches to fit anyone just right. I've designed this pattern to be oversized, for lots of snuggly coziness.
The pattern for this easy pocket shawl uses the alpine stitch. If you've never done the alpine stitch before, no worries. I'll show you how to do this easy stitch in the video below. And if you know how to make a double crochet, you'll be all set! While this is not a fast 2-hour pattern, like my slouch hat, the alpine stitch will provide you with lots of warmth on cold winter days.

Sandy
I found this pattern and decided to give it a go. Everything is going fine except the row ends are uneven. I’ve never had that problem before and am wondering if part of the instructions were left out. I’m hoping the border will even things out but wanted to ask about it. I’m repeating rows 4 and 5 to widen the shawl, ending each row with a dc or sc, depending on where I am in the pattern repeat. After turning, I ch 3 or 1 (again depending on where I am in the repeat) and start stitching again in the second ch from the hook. I’m using bulky yarn (Lion Brand Scarfie) for the first time, so maybe my tension is off. Is it supposed to be uneven at the ends??
maplewoodroad
Hi Sandy! I'm not exactly sure what you mean by uneven. Are you getting a little bit of a wave effect on the edges? Is it off by a lot or just a little bit? I personally haven't heard of this happening before. If it's just slight, then yes the border should even everything out. But if it's more than that, I'm not sure what's going on. It sounds like you're doing everything correctly.
Renee
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern!! It's beautiful!!
maplewoodroad
Thank you so much! 🙂

I love your detailed instructions! I am going to try making this shawl!!
maplewoodroad
Thanks so much! Enjoy & let me know if you have any questions. 🙂

I had the same problem with curling. Hoping the border will help with that. How do you stitch the border where you've chained three for the hdc stitch on the ends?
maplewoodroad
I'm not sure why it's curling on you. Hope that straightens out as you get more into the shawl. For the hdc in the corners, just make 3 hdc in the same corner stitch. Hope that helps. 🙂
Vanessa
In my home town craft stores don't carry premier puzzle yarn.
What yarn weight is premier puzzle yarn, I have found a different yarn to use, it's Lion Brand Scarfie #5.it seems to be working great.
maplewoodroad
Hi Vanessa! Premier Puzzle yarn does seem to be a tricky yarn to find. It's a #5 bulky weight, so you chose right! 🙂
Carol Lee
The yarn Premier Puzzle in Riddle is available on Amazon $10.89
maplewoodroad
Oh wonderful! That's great to know, thanks! 🙂
Marla Wetherell
I love this pattern. I love the fpbp , gives so much texture an easy.I love the color. I do have premier puzzle yarn I ordered different colors but wasn't sure what patter I was gonna do, I knew I wanted to do a shawl with the color way Suduko. I wish I could get the Ripple too. But think you said it was discontinued. Bummer. Anyway. I will try to post a photo when I get it done. Thank you and nice to read about you and your husband. Sounds to me like We got lots in common. I like gardening and cooking crafting and walking in the woods. Take care. Marla.
maplewoodroad
Thanks so much Marla! Yes, the color was called Riddle and last I checked it was unfortunately discontinued. So excited to see your shawl! Please share a picture of it on our Maplewood Road Community Facebook page when it's finished! 🙂

Viana,
Is there a mistake in the instructions for the pocket, Row 8? Is the pocket supposed to be the same pattern as the shawl?
maplewoodroad
No, I don't believe so. Row 8 breaks up the pattern just slightly, but if you'd like to continue with the pattern so it looks the same throughout the pocket, then by all means, do that! 🙂
Sara C Reichler
Hi, Viana. This is a beautiful piece. Would you mind sharing the kind of yarn you used and the color(s)? I'm newly getting back into crochet after some years and I'm insecure about terminology--things change. I love this website!! I want to move to Bucks County and be your best friend! LOL Thank you for all the wonderful goodies to look at and try!
maplewoodroad
Thank you so much Sara! For this shawl, I used Premier Puzzle Yarn in a color called Riddle, which sadly this color has been discontinued. And welcome back to crochet! If you have any more questions, please ask, I'm happy to help. 🙂
Nancy
I've been crocheting for 50+ years and the front & back post double crochet stitches are probably my least favorite stitches. Not sure why, but I love the look of your shawl, so I'm going to try & push past my dislike of that stitch.
My question is, what is the repeat on the shawl, in case I want to take it longer or shorter?
Thanks!
maplewoodroad
Hi Nancy! I believe in you, you can do it! If it helps, the front and back post double crochet stitches get easier the more you do them, so by the time you're finished this shawl, you should be a pro. If you'd like to make it longer or shorter: To change the length of the pocket shawl, simply increase or decrease the number of foundation row chain stitches. To change the width of the pocket shawl, just increase or decrease the number of rows.

I am crocheting this shawl. I love the stitch. Did you have problems with it curling. I have started over using a looser stitch.
I am using a #5 yarn that you suggested.
maplewoodroad
Hmmm, I don't recall having an issue with curling. I'm wondering why that might be happening to you and the only thing I can think of right now is to ask if your tension is tight?
Laura
I recently watched your tutorial for the Alpine Stitch. I have also recently learned and been practiceing my fpdc and bpfc. I notice for the Alpine you did a sc above the dc then fpdc back down into the dc.. why not into the sc?
maplewoodroad
Since the sc doesn't really have any post to speak of, there's really no room to do a fpdc or bpdc into a sc. Hope that helps! 🙂
Beth
Love this shawl pattern. Thank you for sharing. Love the stitch and the color of the yarn, as well. I never have used bulky yarn and I have been crocheting for years. With the pandemic, I order more of my yarn on line. Would you please share what brand of yarn you used and the color?
maplewoodroad
Absolutely! For this shawl, I used Premier Puzzle Yarn in a color called Riddle.
