There's just nothing like homemade waffles on a Sunday morning. Golden brown waffles that are crisp on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, covered in butter and maple syrup. And you can whip up this batter in about 5 minutes!

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? So why not make it amazing?!
There's no wrong way to enjoy waffles...whether you enjoy them with an almost embarrassing amount of butter and syrup (like me!), or with fruit piled high on top, or even with a dollop of whipped cream. They're all delicious.
For me, a Sunday breakfast often means making a batch of my old fashioned pancakes. Other times, I'm in the mood french toast with bacon, apples, and pecans or a serving of brioche french toast casserole. But then again, cinnamon roll donuts are pretty amazing too. Are you starting to see a trend here? π
But these homemade waffles are sooo ridiculously simple, I can pretty much guarantee you already have all the ingredients in your pantry right now. The only other thing you'll need is a waffle iron (which is kind of mandatory for making waffles from scratch).
π§Ύ Ingredients
My homemade waffles are made with 8 simple ingredients.
- All purpose flour - Your everyday, all purpose flour works well in this homemade waffle recipe.
- Granulated sugar - Adding a little sweetness to waffles is what separates waffles from pancakes.
- Baking powder - Gives your waffles a little lift, so they turn out nice and fluffy.
- Salt - Regular table salt is used to enhance all the other flavors.
- Butter - I use salted butter in my waffles, but if you prefer unsalted butter, you can certainly substitute that.
- Milk - Whole milk or 2% is my personal choice, but you can use any milk you prefer.
- Eggs - Whole eggs bring an additional richness to the flavor of waffles.
- Vanilla extract - Added sweet vanilla flavor is always welcome.
See the recipe card below for full list of ingredients and their measurements.
π₯£ Homemade waffle mix
This is so easy. Ready?
Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
In a separate bowl, whisk melted butter, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
Add wet to dry ingredients and stir. Don't overmix, though...a few small lumps are fine.
Now, let the batter rest on the counter for a few minutes while you heat up your waffle iron.
π§ Cooking waffles
My favorite waffle iron is a stovetop version of a belgian waffle maker. The slim profile makes it easy to hide away when not in use and there is somehow a classic, old-fashioned sensibility about it. Hey, even if the power is out, I can still make waffles!
If you're using a stovetop waffle iron, like me, heat it up on the stove over low-medium heat for a few minutes.
Once your waffle iron is ready, spray the inside with a little cooking spray to make sure your waffles don't stick. Then, pour in the waffle batter until it almost reaches the top and close the lid.
Cook for about 2 minutes, then flip it over and cook for another 2 minutes or until golden brown.
Note: If you're using an electric waffle maker, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Serve immediately with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
π§ Waffle toppings
- Butter and maple syrup - You can't possibly go wrong with this classic combo.
- Honey - The natural sweetness of honey can't be beat.
- Fruit - All fruit is good fruit on top of waffles. Add some berries, apples, bananas, peaches, mangoes, anything! You can even make a berry compote in a few minutes.
- Whipped cream - Get in touch with your inner child again and top your waffles with a big dollop of homemade whipped cream.
- Ice cream, chocolate syrup, and walnuts - Speaking of feeling like a kid again, why not enjoy some waffles a la mode?! Salted caramel syrup would be yummy too. Waffles aren't only for breakfast, they also make a great dessert.
- Nutella - There's something about Nutella that makes everything better. Try my strawberry shortcake waffles with Nutella!
- Cinnamon roll icing - Okay, is it just me, or does this sound a-ma-zing?
- Fried chicken - Of course!
β FAQ
Absolutely! Make a whole batch, then keep on a covered plate in the fridge for up to 5 days. When ready to enjoy, pop them in the microwave for a minute, heat up in the toaster oven, or warm them up in a pan with a little butter.
You can also freeze your homemade waffles for up to 3 months. Place in a freezer bag and squeeze out as much air as possible. Then let them thaw in the fridge and heat up as above.
While they are quite similar, waffle mix has more in the way of sugar and fat content, which gives waffles that crispy golden exterior that we all know and love so well.
They're made with exactly the same batter. The only difference is that belgian waffles are made in a waffle iron that is deeper, resulting in deeper pockets on the waffle that will hold even more syrup! Yessss!

I keep this recipe right with my waffle maker instead of looking for it each time but then you could also put in small binder with your favorite waffle / pancakes mixes.
