As if waffles weren't already delicious enough, let's take them to a whole new level and make strawberry shortcake waffles with Nutella! These waffles are drizzled with chocolate hazelnut spread, then a layer of berry compote, and finally topped with cream cheese whipped cream.

My strawberry shortcake waffles will have you saying Hallelujah! They're so supremely decadent, and rich, and flavorful. This is not diet food, ladies and gentlemen. These waffles were made for treating yourself after a hard day (or week or month) at work and you have earned this!
It's the age old question: Waffles or pancakes? I often navigate toward good old fashioned pancakes or maybe french toast casserole, but now and then a waffle is simply necessary. Their fluffy insides and golden crispy exterior hold so much more in the way of toppings, it's like the gift that keeps on giving.
But what kind of waffles? There's frozen waffles, regular waffles, and belgian waffles. I recently developed a recipe for homemade waffles, so they are my go-to on a Sunday morning (or Friday night). The simple answer is: Whatever waffles you like. This recipe is all about the toppings. But honestly, I'd be honored if you tried this on top of my homemade waffles.
π§Ύ Ingredients
- Waffles - Any waffles will do, but again, I'd be honored if you tried my recipe for homemade waffles.
- Strawberries - The strawberries will be chopped, mashed, and made into a quick and easy compote. So, you can use either fresh or frozen berries here.
- Granulated sugar - Added to both the strawberry compote and whipped cream for sweetness.
- Heavy cream - The main ingredient in making whipped cream.
- Cream cheese - I decided to add cream cheese to my whipped cream to add a bit more decadence and richness.
- Vanilla extract - Just a little bit in the whipped cream to add a sweet vanilla flavor.
- Nutella - This chocolate hazelnut spread is loved the world over. We'll warm up and drizzle the Nutella over the warm waffles.
See the recipe card below for full list of ingredients and their measurements.
π Strawberry compote
We're first going to make the strawberry compote. Hull and slice about 6 large strawberries, and mash them with a fork.
Place the mashed strawberries and 1 tablespoon of sugar into a small saucepan and warm up over low-medium heat. Simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
π₯£ Waffles and whipped cream
Next, start making the waffles of your choice, whether that means toasting or cooking.
While the strawberries are simmering and the waffles are cooking, let's make the whipped cream. This can be done by hand with a whisk, but a stand mixer or handheld electric mixer makes it much easier.
Mix together the heavy cream, softened cream cheese, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and vanilla until firm peaks.
Note: This whipped cream won't really reach stiff peaks as much as a regular whipped cream does, due to the addition of cream cheese.
π§ Assembling waffles with toppings
Place Nutella in a small bowl and microwave for 30 seconds. Then, stir with a spoon to make it soft and spreadable.
Once the waffles are ready, top them first with Nutella, then layer on the strawberry compote and whipped cream. Enjoy!
