🎶 Here comes Peter Cottontail, hoppin' down the bunny trail! 🎶
Jump to:
This spring, make a cuddly crochet bunny amigurumi for yourself or as a gift for a child who would love this new friend. This soft friend will travel with you wherever you go, always ready to snuggle for a nap or ready for playtime. Measuring just 11 inches tall in a seated position, this bunny is the perfect size to go everywhere. And this cute bunny is made from soft yarn and felt, so there are no small parts to worry about with young children.
With the upcoming Easter holiday approaching, after making my Dollar Tree Easter wreath for the front door, I felt inspired to create a new friend. Grabbing hooks and yarn, and putting my thinking cap on, I designed this Peter Cottontail stuffed animal and love how he brings a breath of fresh spring air to my room...and now yours too!
This Easter bunny amigurumi free crochet pattern uses simple stitches, including the single crochet, with increases and decreases. If you’d like to review before beginning this project, just check out my tutorial videos on our YouTube channel.
🧶 Materials
- Approximately 200 yards of #4 worsted weight yarn (I used Mainstays yarn in the color Aran, but use any brand & color you like)
- Felt in white, black, and pink (I also used a light blue for the flower)
- D-3 / 3.25-mm crochet hook
- FiberFil stuffing
- Embroidery floss for the mouth (dark grey or black) and white dots in the eyes (white)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Stitch markers
🧷 Stitch markers
Stitch markers will come in handy for multiple steps throughout making this amigurumi bunny rabbit. As most parts are worked in-the-round, you’ll find it handy to place a stitch marker at the beginning of each “row” so you’ll know when you’ve made a complete circle (unless you want to count every single stitch, which I certainly don’t want to do).
Also, stitch markers will come in handy when you’re assembling the finished piece. See “Putting the Bunny Amigurumi Together” at the bottom of this pattern.
📏 Finished size
This bunny amigurumi measures approximately 11″ tall in a seated position.
⭐ Notes
- All instructions, abbreviations, and materials in this free pattern are given in US terminology.
- For this project, we will work “in-the-round,” meaning that you will not slip stitch at the end of each row, but will continue working continuously around. However, in most cases, for each row, I’ve included the number of stitches that should be in each row at the end, in parentheses.
- For a reminder of how to do increase (inc) and decrease (dec) stitches, watch my crochet pumpkin video, for instruction.
- The head and body will be crocheted together as one piece. All other parts will be crocheted separately. At the end of the pattern, you’ll use a yarn needle to sew the arms, legs, ears, tail onto the body (there is no tutorial for this part…it’s just a simple whip stitch). Likewise, as you may want different eyes and nose than I have done, there is no tutorial for that. Simply cut out the felt shapes and stitch them onto the head using regular thread, one layer at a time.
🪝 Crochet abbreviations for this pattern

- (inc) – increase; perform two stitches in the same space/stitch
- (dec) – decrease; see “notes” above
- sc2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together; this is a decrease

✨ How to make a pompom with yarn
If you’ve never made a pompom with yarn again, get ready to become addicted to making them. It’s so easy and fun! For this particular pompom, I used my fingers.
Holding your hand flat, wrap the yarn around 4 fingers, 150 times. Yes, I said 150! Cut the yarn and very carefully slide it off the object it’s wrapped around. Using another piece of yarn that’s about a foot long, tightly knot it around the center of the yarn bundle.
Then, using scissors, cut all the loops of yarn from the pompom and shape it into a general circle shape. Hold the pompom in all different directions, to make sure you’re shaping it from all sides. BUT, careful to leave one long strand of yarn from that second piece of yarn you used to knot the bundle together! Finally, with that long strand of yarn, sew and knot the pompom onto the bunny's bottom.
🐇 Putting it together and finishing touches
At the end of the pattern, you’ll use a yarn needle to sew the arms, legs, ears, and tail onto the body (there is no tutorial for this part…it’s just a simple whip stitch).
Likewise, as you may want different eyes and nose than I have done, there is no tutorial for that. Simply cut out the felt shapes and stitch them onto the face using regular thread, one layer at a time. The white dots in the eyes were made by creating a French knot with embroidery floss.
⭐ Tip #1: Place each body part (arms, legs, ears, etc) onto the body and attach with stitch markers. This way, you can see that they’re exactly where you want them before beginning to sew them on.
⭐ Tip #2: I used these instructions to make a felt flower for the top of the bunny's head.
⭐ Tip #3: To add just a touch of color to the bunny's cheeks, lightly touch a bit of blush onto the yarn.
