Salted caramel cream cold brew is a morning treat that's so easy to make at home, you'll wonder why you haven't been making it forever. Well...you will now! Once you see how quickly you can create this amazing cafe creation in just a few minutes, there's no turning back.
A few weeks ago, I made Starbucks' sweet cream cold foam myself and was amazed at the simplicity of the recipe. Since then, I've endeavored to find other tasty drinks I could recreate in my own kitchen.
And who doesn't love salted caramel? Whether it's with a bowl of ice cream or drizzled over fudgy Nutella brownies, it's definitely a crowd pleaser. The smooth, rich flavor of sweet caramel combined with just a sprinkle of salt...OMG.
π₯ Equipment
You won't need any fancy equipment to make this salted caramel cream cold foam. Whether you prefer a handheld immersion blender (which is what I use), a regular blender, milk frother, french press, whisk, or a mason jar that you shake, shake, shake...it's up to you.
π§Ύ Ingredients
In addition to your favorite brew, you're just 6 simple ingredients away from making the coffee drink of your dreams:
- Coffee -Β Brew up your favorite coffee. This drink is served cold, but whether you make a cold brew or hot brew, the choice is yours. I've gone into more detail on the topic of cold brew vs iced coffee below. Whichever you choose, both ways are a delicious compliment to this drink.
- Heavy cream -Β This makes the base of the cold foam. Think ofΒ cold foamΒ as a moreΒ grown-upΒ version of whipped cream.
- Milk -Β Milk is used to thin the cold foam just a bit, so it's not quite as thick as regular whipped cream. While 2% works best for getting the most froth, you can also replace it with any other cow's milk or plant milk, but the consistency may be a bit thinner.
- Powdered sugar -Β I prefer to use powdered sugar because it creates a smooth, sweet blend. You can substitute regular sugar, if you prefer.
- Vanilla extract -Β A touch of vanilla makes everything better.
- Caramel sauce -Β While I'd highly recommend myΒ homemade salted caramel sauce, which just takes a few minutes to make, you can use store-bought instead.
- Sea salt -Β A coarse sea salt like Maldon sea salt flakes works best.
See the recipe card below for full list of ingredients and their measurements.
π₯ How to make cold brew coffee
It all starts with making a cold brew coffee.
Traditional cold brew coffee is made by mixing together a medium to coarse grind of coffee with cold water, in a cup or jar, then letting it steep for at least 12 hours (overnight).
Then, in the morning, filter out the coffee grounds by pouring it through a coffee filter or cheesecloth. This results in a really smooth coffee that's less acidic than a regular hot-brewed coffee.
But be aware, cold brew coffee does tend to have quite a bit more caffeine.
β Cold brew coffee vs iced coffee
Cold brew coffee is made using the brewing technique mentioned above. Iced coffee is just coffee that's hot brewed, then poured in a glass with ice. The only problem with this is that unless you drink your coffee really quickly, the ice will water down the coffee.
There are two ways to counteract watered down iced coffee:
- Brew your coffee ahead of time, then let it cool in the refrigerator. This way, you won't need to use ice cubes at all.
- Use coffee ice cubes. After brewing a pot of coffee, pour into an ice cube tray and let freeze. This way, when they melt, they're adding more coffee to your drink instead of just plain water.
π₯£ How to make salted caramel cream cold brew
This seriously couldn't be easier: Using your mixer of choice, blend together all ingredients until it's reached a consistency similar to melted ice cream. Using an immersion blender, this took about 30 seconds for me.
Pour cold coffee into a glass or mug, leaving some room on top for the cold foam.
Spoon salted caramel cream over the top of the coffee. Leave it to float on top or use a spoon to stir into your coffee.
And an extra drizzle of caramel syrup on top never hurt anyone! Enjoy!
β Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! Both the cold brew coffee and salted caramel cold foam can be made ahead of time, so you can double, triple, quadruple, or even quintuple the recipe! Hello to a week's worth of coffee made in one shot!
Make a large batch of cold brew coffee and keep it in the fridge for several days, so you don't have to brew fresh coffee every day.
The cold foam ingredients can also be stirred together ahead of time, but will need to be frothed just before using.
