The key to a good pineapple slushie is starting with cold ingredients. Fresh, frozen, or canned pineapple all work great here, so use whatever you have on hand. The result is thick, icy, and incredibly refreshing.
The best part? You probably already have everything you need. Three ingredients, five minutes, and you're done.
My strawberry simple syrup and raspberry simple syrup are both great additions to this slushie if you want to sweeten it up a little. The strawberry cocktail or mocktail is always a hit too, and if you're in the mood for something more grown-up, the Hugo spritz and Aperol spritz are both worth a try. And my watermelon lemonade with rosemary is basically summertime in a glass.

🍍 A little pineapple history
Pineapple originally came from South America, where indigenous people had been cultivating it for centuries before Europeans ever laid eyes on it. When Columbus brought it back to Europe in the 1490s, it caused a sensation. For a while, pineapples were so rare and expensive that you could rent one just to display at a party. Not eat it. Just show it off. It wasn't until the 1800s when commercial cultivation took off that pineapple became widely available.
Pineapple is also genuinely good for you, which is a nice bonus. It's packed with vitamin C and contains bromelain, a natural enzyme that helps with digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. So basically this slushie is health food. You're welcome.
🧾 Ingredients
- Pineapple (fresh, frozen, or canned)
- Ice cubes
- Sugar (optional)

⭐ Ingredient notes
- Pineapple - Fresh, frozen, or canned all work great here. Canned is what I used and it's perfectly convenient. Frozen will give you a thicker, icier texture. Fresh works too, just make sure it's ripe and sweet.
- Ice cubes - More ice gives you a slushier texture, less ice gives you something closer to a smoothie.
- Sugar - Totally optional. Pineapple is naturally sweet, so taste it first before adding any. If you're using canned pineapple packed in juice or syrup, you probably won't need it at all.
See the recipe card below for full ingredients and measurements.
🍍 How to freeze pineapple
Cut fresh pineapple into chunks and spread them in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Freeze until solid, about 2 hours, then transfer to a zip-lock bag. They'll keep in the freezer for up to 6 months and are ready to toss straight into the blender whenever you need them.
🥣 How to make a pineapple slushie
Add the pineapple, ice cubes, and sugar (if using) to a blender.
Blend until smooth, or pulse a few times if you want more of a slushy, icy texture. Both are good, it just depends on what you're going for.

Pour into glasses and serve immediately. This one won't wait - it starts melting fast, so drink it right away.
Enjoy!

🥤 Slushie vs smoothie
The difference comes down to texture. A slushie is icier and thinner, almost like a frozen drink you can sip through a straw. A smoothie is thicker and creamier. This recipe lands closer to a slushie, but you can nudge it either way depending on how much ice you use. More ice, slushier. Less ice, more smoothie-like.
💫 Variations
- 🥥 Make it creamy - Add a splash of coconut milk or coconut cream for a pineapple whip vibe.
- 🍋 Add some citrus - A squeeze of fresh lime or lemon juice brightens everything up and adds a little tartness.
- 🍓 Mix in other fruit - Mango, strawberry, or passion fruit all work great with pineapple. Toss in a handful and blend away.
- 🍹 Make it a cocktail - Add a shot of white rum or vodka for a frozen tropical drink. Hello, happy hour!
- 🌶️ Add some heat - A pinch of chili powder or tajin on top gives it a sweet and spicy kick that's surprisingly good.
- 🍯 Sweeten it differently - Swap the sugar for honey, agave, or maple syrup for a slightly different flavor.
🍽️ Serving suggestions
Serve it right away in a tall glass with a pineapple wedge, a sprig of fresh mint, or a slice of lime on the rim. A paper straw doesn't hurt either. If you want to get a little extra, a sprinkle of tajin or chili powder on top is really good.
🧺 Storage
This one doesn't store well. You really need to make it fresh and drink it right away. Once it sits, it separates and gets watery fast. If you want to prep ahead, measure out your ingredients and have everything ready to go, then blend right before serving.
👩🍳 Pro tips
- 🍍 Use cold ingredients straight from the fridge or freezer for the best texture.
- 🧊 More ice gives you a slushier texture, less ice gives you something closer to a smoothie.
- 🍍 Taste before adding sugar. Canned pineapple packed in juice is already pretty sweet and may not need any.
- 🥤 Serve immediately.
- 🍍 If your blender is struggling, let the pineapple sit at room temperature for a few minutes before blending.
- 🍹 A food processor works too if you don't have a blender, though the texture may be slightly chunkier.

❓ FAQ
Yes to all three! Fresh pineapple works great as long as it's ripe and sweet. Frozen gives you the thickest, iciest texture. Canned is what I used and it's perfectly convenient.
A food processor works too, though the texture may be a little chunkier.
Not really. This one needs to be made fresh and served immediately. It separates and gets watery once it sits.
Yes! A Ninja Slushi or similar machine works perfectly for this recipe.
Add sugar, honey, agave, or maple syrup a little at a time and pulse a few times in the blender until it's sweet enough for you.
For a thicker slushie, add more pineapple or less ice. For a thinner consistency, add a splash of pineapple juice or water and blend again.
A slushie has more ice and a thinner, icier texture, while a smoothie is creamier and thicker. This recipe lands somewhere in between depending on how much ice you use.
