"Keep calm and two Aperol Spritz please" ~Unknown (but probably me)
Looking for a refreshing taste of Italy, but right at home? Then you’ve come to the right place! On a recent trip to southern Italy, I discovered this amazing cocktail that refreshes like no other on a hot summer day. During our vacation, after walking around the cobblestone streets in the glorious sunshine, we would wander into an outdoor bar for an apéritif.
Sitting among the locals, trying to understand a few words here and there, the waitress would bring us a plate of olive oil taralli (which seem to be their favorite bar snacks & I totally understand why, yum!) and we would order our drinks. Each and every afternoon (don’t judge, I was on vacation), I would order an Aperol Spritz.
Aperol is made of gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona, among other ingredients, and tastes a little bitter, much like Campari, but when it’s mixed together with other ingredients, it’s just lovely. Even if you've never heard of Aperol, it's become popular in the US in recent years, so you should have no problem finding it at your local liquor store. The recipe is simple and I’m sure it will become your new favorite too!
Aperol Spritz Ingredients
- Club soda or seltzer
- Orange slice
- Ice cubes
In a glass with ice, pour equal parts Aperol and Prosecco. Top off with a splash of club soda or seltzer and a slice of orange.
All that’s left to do is sit back, relax, and say ahhhhhhhhh.
Please drink responsibly.
