Isn’t it funny – you open the fridge and look at all the food in there…or the lack of it. Then you open your pantry and marvel at all the stuff that’s in there. Amazing! You find a packet of Swedish Meatball Sauce from Ikea, then realize you haven’t been to Ikea in two years.

 

You open your freezer, and well, close it immediately again…you don’t even want to know what’s in there.

 

We’ve all been there and it’s time to do something about it. Starting with this recipe, we’re going to build a basic pantry. Over the next months, we’ll add pantry items and recipes, hopefully with tons of suggestions from you! Soon, we’ll have a list of pantry items and recipes…so we’ll never be caught in this situation again!

 

The next time you feel that hunger pang on a Saturday afternoon, you can bring out your inner chef, no sweat!

 

Let’s start with a twist on a classic…which I developed over time, and will still change going forward. But that’s the whole point! Once you get the feel for what flavors and textures go together, who needs a recipe? Just think about the meaty tuna, the briny capers, creamy mayo, and the snappy jalapeño. Your taste buds will be longing for more. Open your fridge and your pantry, and in no time you’ll say “Wow, I just did that!

Gourmet Tuna Sandwich Ingredients

  • 1 big slice of bread, toasted
  • One 5-oz can of tuna
  • 2 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small shallot, chopped
  • 1/2 jalapeño, deseeded and chopped
  • 1 Tbsp capers, chopped
  • Salt & pepper

 

Preparation

Drain the water or oil from the tuna can, and add the tuna to a bowl. If you like the chunky kind, break it apart with a fork. Add the chopped shallot, jalapeño, and capers. Mix in the mayonnaise and olive oil, and season with salt & pepper (add hot sauce or green salsa if you like). Give it a good stir. If you happen to have a fresh lemon handy, squirt some lemon juice on the mixture to brighten it up a bit!

Toast your favorite bread to your favorite level of brownness and put everything together to make your Ridiculously Easy Gourmet Tuna Sandwich. “Wow, I just did that!” How do you feel?

 

As I mentioned earlier, beginning with this article, we’ll start a guide to build a basic pantry that will expand going forward, until there’s no excuse to order a pizza, Chinese, or run to the deli around the corner (although there’s nothing wrong with that when your craving tells you).

Ridiculously Easy Gourmet Tuna Sandwich

A delicious twist on a classic lunchtime favorite.  Just think about the meaty tuna, the briny capers, creamy mayo, and the snappy jalapeño. Your taste buds will be longing for more.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 big slice of bread, toasted
